Today’s bike tour through Rangsdorf will enable the 17 participants in the 12th International Work Camp to familiarise themselves with their hosts and the venue. Aged between 16 and 23, these young people from Azerbaijan, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine and Germany will spend the next three weeks as volunteers in the “Gutspark Groß Machnow” where they will be involved in maintenance, preservation and conservation work.
Organised by the Landschaftspflegeverein Mittelbrandenburg e.V., the International Work Camp has set itself the task since 2005 of inspiring young people from all over the world for maintaining and developing the natural landscape of Rangsdorf.
The Work Camp serves towards careful handling of the “Gutspark Groß Machnow” park protected as a garden monument where the volunteers will remove the park pathways, currently paved with asphalt, in order to create a natural pathway along the same route which is appropriate to a listed garden. The meadows in the park will also be tended and conservation measures undertaken under professional supervision in protected biotopes.
The International Work Camp was first held in 2005. The Landschaftspflegeverein Mittelbrandenburg e.V. (Association of Rural Conservation of Middle Brandenburg) and the Verein Internationale Jugendgemeinschaftsdienste (ijgd, Association for International Youth Community Projects), are the organisers of the Work Camp. With this year’s participants, a total of 194 young people representing 36 countries have admirably served towards preserving the Rangsdorf area and landscape since the Work Camp was first established. Apart from working outdoors, it goes without saying that the Work Camp also focuses on teamwork and co-operation by people of various cultures: these young people from all over the world effortlessly work together as a team and complaints about sweat, insect bites and blisters on their hands can be heard in any number of languages.
Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH is sponsoring the International Work Camp in its twelfth year. During construction of Berlin Brandenburg Airport, the airport company is committed to numerous compensatory and replacement measures over the long term. The goal of these compensatory measures under Germany’s nature conservation laws is to retain the natural balance in the habitat around BER. The most extensive of these projects involves upgrading the Zülow Lowlands, a former lowlands and cultural landscape used for agricultural purposes with an area of about 2,600 hectares located between Mittenwalde, Dabendorf and Rangsdorf.
The Work Camp will continue until 28 August. Media representatives are invited to visit the young people on the site and speak to them about their work in landscape preservation.
