2013: another record year for passengers traffic, progress with major projects and more jobs

Published on : Monday, January 20, 2014

Euro-AirportWith close to 5.9 million passengers at the end of 2013, EuroAirport recorded growth of 10% compared with 2012 (5.3 million). This was well above the European average.
Expressed as a percent, the total number of flights (take-offs and landings) remained stable (0%), with 87,319 movements compared with 87,356 in 2012. However, the differential between the increase in the number of scheduled flights and the decrease in charter flights rose slightly (by 2%).
The 10% rise in the number of passengers is explained by four main factors: use of aircraft with greater capacity, better seat occupancy, extension of the airport’s flight offering and additional flights to existing destinations. The expansion of the flight network reinforced EuroAirport’s position as the airport of choice for residents of the tri-national region.
Freight business remained stable compared with 2012 (0%), posting an overall result of 94,000 tons (300 tons less than in 2012).
Express freight was up 3% at the end of 2013.
Estimated at around 6,100 at the end of 2013, the number of jobs on the airport site rose by 4% over 2012. EuroAirport thus remains a major employer in the region.
Following the signing of the framework agreement between France and Switzerland on 22 March 2012, which provides companies in the Swiss and shared sectors of the airport with a frame of reference in terms of labour law, the terms for implementation were defined in the course of 2013 with application scheduled for the first quarter of 2014. This remarkable and unprecedented advance enables Swiss companies to conduct business on the airport site within a more secure legal framework.

In 2013, EuroAirport passengers were able to take advantage of six new scheduled flight destinations – Calvi, Krakow, Figari, Krakow, Seville and Tuzla – as well as more charter flights to Antalya, Palma and Tel Aviv.
The increase in number of flights to some destinations reflects the success of the current portfolio and a strong appetite for travel among the region’s population. The visitor market remains stable, accounting for 30% of passengers.

The highlights of 2013 include:
– The renovation and re-opening of the Euroairport Skyview Lounge, which is now accessible to all passengers, whether entitled or paying.
– The commissioning of the EuroAirport Business Center, which covers 200m2 and offers ten modular meeting rooms and an immediate online booking function at www.euroairport.com/businesscenter

– The launch of a new catering concept as of 1 October 2013 with the opening of three initial points of sale by the end of the year: Wellness, Cuillère Suisse by Canonica and Trib’s by RELAY.

– Start of construction on the new Cargo Terminal with controlled temperature infrastructure in the southeast area of the airport (zone 4), representing an investment of over 40 million euros.
– Concrete progress with the rail link project:

– Activation of the website www.eapbyrail.org
– The organization of a public consultation process on the project between 6 May and 20 June 2013, including submission of the outcome report by François Leblond, who presided over the consultation process, to the National Commission for Public Debate (CNDP) in France.

– Several environmental projects, including:

– Transfer of the mobile noise measuring station from Ranspach-le-bas to Hegenheim
– Confirmation of the implementation of tougher night-time noise protection measures as of the 2014 summer timetable
– Renovation of the cogeneration plant
– Submission of a construction permit for a fourth aeronautic maintenance hangar by AMAC Aerospace in zone 6 bis.

For 2014, EuroAirport is delighted to announce six new scheduled flight destinations: easyJet will be serving Bastia, Brindisi, Montpellier and Reykjavik, with Ryanair serving Dublin and London Stansted. In addition, there will be more flights to some destinations: Edinburgh by easyJet (7x weekly, +2), Antalya by Sunexpress (7x weekly, +4), and Skopje by Wizzair (5x weekly, +2). easyJet will discontinue flights to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen and will serve Larnaca 2x weekly.

The forecasts for 2014 remain optimistic: EuroAirport envisages passenger growth of around 5%, corresponding to just over 6 million passengers, and a slight increase in freight business of 2% (96 000 tons).

Goals for 2014 include:
– Commissioning of the Cargo Terminal in autumn 2014.
– Continued implementation of the airport’s new catering concept, including the opening of the 10 remaining points of sale by the end of the year.
– Publication of the outcome report of the public consultation on the rail link in the first quarter of 2014.
– Commencement of preliminary project studies on the rail link.
– Continuation of a quality dialogue with the stakeholder groups and local residents.
