ACAA to Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Republic Airways’ First Flight to PIT

pittsburgh-airport-300x68Republic Airways will relive the Company’s historic first flight to Pittsburgh 40 years ago. A ceremonial flight filled with Company team members will be honored with a water cannon salute by Pittsburgh International Airport before a ceremonial cake cutting and celebration at Republic’s Pittsburgh maintenance hangar.

The event is the kickoff of Republic Airways’ 40th anniversary celebration. The Company began operations 40 years ago as Chautauqua Airlines, a small turboprop commuter airline then based in Jamestown, N.Y., that since has grown into one of the country’s largest regional air carriers with over 6,300 employees, over 600 of whom work in Pittsburgh.
 

“We’re proud of our ties to Pittsburgh and the course of success we have charted thanks to the hardworking people of Pennsylvania,” said Republic Airways COO and Executive Vice President Wayne Heller.
 

Among those expected to attend are Pennsylvania State Sen. Matt Smith (D-District 37), members of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, as well as other airport officials and key stakeholders.
 

Republic is the No. 1 operator in Pittsburgh, handling 21.3 percent of the landings at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Leases three bays totaling about 133,000 square feet of hangar space, one of the largest commercial airline operations at Pittsburgh.

 
Employs about 150 mechanics and 450 Pilots and Flight Attendants based in Pittsburgh.
Primary receiver for Company’s new Embraer 175 aircraft for American Eagle, as well as serve as Company’s primary East Coast heavy maintenance base for its Bombardier Q400 aircraft.

 

News media are welcome to attend the Aug. 1 event. The E190 aircraft is scheduled to land at11:10 a.m. and will proceed directly to Republic’s hangar for the water cannon salute by the airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Department.

 

Directions to the hangar (will not show on GPS devices): Take 376 West or East to Exit 57 (376 Business toward Moon). Go through two stop lights (cross over University Ave.) and turn left at third stop light onto Hanger Service Road. Follow the road under the taxiway. Go through three stop signs and look for two big blue hangars. Check in at the security gate, Building 479.
