Airbus-opens-its-doorsOn 11 October Airbus welcomed eighty schoolgirls to its Toulouse site for a day of discovery and discussions. The purpose of the “Les Elles du Futur” initiative is to make careers in aeronautics better known and to help attract young girls into the sector.

The programme for the day included films on how aircraft are made, a visit to several aircraft assembly lines, and meetings with Airbus female employees, from all academic levels to discuss their careers and professions.

“The major issue on getting more females into our sector essentially lies in the small proportion of women taking technical training, whatever the level. This is why we are focussing our efforts on young schoolgirls and female students. It’s often owing to a lack of information that young girls hesitate to choose professions in the aeronautical sector when deciding what career path they want to take. However, the majority of professions in this sector are accessible to women, and through this type of initiative, we are opening up a vast field of opportunities for them,” explained Marie Stephane Pefferkorn, head of diversity at Airbus in France. “Strengthening the gender mix helps the company to boost its levels of creativity, innovation and performance.” she added.

This is the second year in a row that Airbus has conducted these awareness-raising campaigns. The previous events were organised on the Airbus sites in Nantes, Saint Nazaire and Toulouse, as well as on its industrial sites in the UK, Germany and Spain.
These initiatives are part of Airbus’ gender mix policy which aims to encourage more women to enter what are traditionally considered to be male professions. With this new initiative Airbus is reasserting its determination to act in favour of diversity, one of the company’s key values.

This diversity policy concerns all Airbus entities worldwide, and focuses on four key aspects in particular: gender mix, inter-generational diversity, cultural and social diversity and disabilities.
