The three-day fishing fair, which focuses mainly on game, sea and pike angling, attracts about 20,000 visitors each year – including influential travel agents and tour operators who specialise in overseas angling holidays, many thousands of fishing enthusiasts from the northern half of Germany, as well as Dutch anglers (given the proximity of Duisburg to the Netherlands), all looking for ideas and suggestions for their next fishing break or holiday destination.

Zoë Redmond, Tourism Ireland’s manager for Central Europe, said: “Germany is the largest outbound travel market in the world and the third-largest source of overseas visitors to the island of Ireland. 2013 was a record year for German visitors to Ireland and Tourism Ireland will be rolling out an extensive programme of promotional activity throughout 2014 – to keep the momentum going and build on that growth. Fishing is very popular here in Germany and is just one of the activities we are promoting, showcasing Longford and the island of Ireland as a fantastic fishing and holiday destination.”
