Celebrations begin for the Chinese Year of the Snake

Premier Ted Baillieu joined members and guests of the Australia China Business Council and the China Chamber of Commerce in Australia last night to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

“It is wonderful that all Victorians can join in the month-long New Year celebrations, ceremonies and displays held in Chinatown, The Chinese Gallery and suburbs all around Victoria,” Mr Baillieu said.

Speaking at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Mr Baillieu highlighted Victoria’s cultural ties with China.

During the successful Super Trade Mission to China in September last year, Mr Baillieu witnessed a Memorandum of Understanding between The Palace Museum in Beijing and the National Gallery of Victoria.

As well as sharing information, expertise and skills, the Palace Museum will share some of China’s national treasures and in exchange the NGV will share some of Victoria’s cultural riches.

“The NGV will be hosting a major exhibition from the Palace Museum in the next few years, adding to Melbourne’s reputation as Australia’s art and culture capital,” Mr Baillieu said.

Mr Baillieu said the agreement would help to develop greater cultural engagement and a deeper understanding between China and Victoria.

“The Victorian Coalition Government is building stronger cultural and educational links – it’s about understanding and friendship,” Mr Baillieu said.

In acknowledging the Year of the Snake, Mr Baillieu also praised the Chinese community in Victoria.

“Our Victorian Chinese community contributes greatly to the rich diversity of ideas, beliefs, traditions and values that are so important to maintaining our state’s vibrant multiculturalism,” Mr Baillieu said.
