Cyclists using Leicester station will now be welcomed with fantastic new cycling facilities following the completion of a £600,000 scheme to deliver a bespoke cycling hub.
Leicester City Deputy Mayor, Councillor Rory Palmer, officially opened the new cycle hub today (29 July) along with Andy Moore, Head of Stations for East Midlands Trains. The hub, delivered through funding awarded by the Department for Transport and distributed via the Association of Train Operating Companies, has delivered significantly improved facilities for cyclists using the station.
The new facility, situated in the old Red Star area of the station has:
· 222 cycles spaces offering storage for different types of bikes
· Cycle shop and hire by Future Cycles
· Male and female changing rooms
· Extensive CCTV
· Air conditioning
· 24 hour electronic access using smartcards
Delivered by Bowmer & Kirkland the project provides a much improved environment for cyclists using the station. With access to safe and secure storage, cyclists can change in dry, safe surroundings before heading on to their destination. With the introduction of the new cycle shop, Future Cycles, owners can also arrange to have their bikes serviced whilst at work.
Councillor Rory Palmer, Deputy Mayor of Leicester said, “The new cycle hub at Leicester Station is a welcomed and improved environment for cyclists as more and more people are choosing to get around Leicester by bike. The Hub positively complements the various cycle link schemes in and around Leicester, especially the Granby Street cycle link scheme. The addition of excellent facilities like this is important as we are anticipating everyday cycling numbers to double by 2018. We need more facilities and initiatives like this to support the anticipated growth and I welcome this demonstration of commitment to cycling from East Midlands Trains.”
Andy Moore, Head of Stations for East Midlands Trains, said: “Good cycle facilities are vital for people choosing to travel to the station via bike. Passengers can now leave their cycles at the station fully confident that they will be safe, secure and protected until they return. The new cycle shop also provides tools to fix cycles and the opportunity for customers to have their bikes serviced before collecting them at the end of the day.”
Phillip Darnton, Chair of the Cycle Rail Working Group said: “The new cycle hub at Leicester is a great facility and East Midlands Trains and their project partners are to be congratulated on it. The project’s funding from the Department for Transport, via the cross industry Cycle Rail Working Group, is part of a much wider investment programme that will more than double the number of station cycle parking spaces to nearly 70,000 by the end of 2015 and see more than 30 cycle hubs opened. The industry’s drive to improve facilities for cycle-rail users across the country is one of the reasons why we are seeing a significant increase in the number of people cycling to and from the station.”
The hub at Leicester is one of three new hubs. Sheffield‘s hub was officially opened at the beginning of July and Nottingham’s hub will be completed later in the summer.
When all the work has been completed cycle storage capacity will have doubled to more than 2500 spaces across the network.
