Euro 2016: significant accommodation price increase

Published on : Wednesday, June 29, 2016

download-119According to a study conducted with the help of the consumers group UFC Que Choisir, the average room price in the ten French host cities of Euro 2016, during 10th of June – 10th of July, has risen up to 80 percent

The football fever is an extremely powerful prices catalyst. The above mentioned study also shows that there are some famous hotels that had abruptly upped their prices, including the Best Western in Marseille, which raised prices by over 1,100 percent for a match night.

The increase that can even reach 80 percent is higher than that recorded 18 years ago, during the Coupe du Monde (+ 41%), the previous competition organized by France. So the price will exceed 100 euros per night between June 10 and July 10.

In three cities, Saint-Etienne, Lille and Bordeaux, the increase will be over 100%. A double room at St. Etienne will cost 180% more than in a normal period. But even so, the 112 euros paid for a room in St. Etienne will be almost twice cheaper compared to a “double” in Paris – St. Denis (204E). Parisian capital area will remain the most expensive, although the price will climb only by 37%.

Jon West, managing director of HRS in the UK commented: “Interestingly, prices for the final in Paris on July 10th are comparatively reasonable. There are still good deals available on hotels near the stadium and even if you don’t have a coveted match ticket, the atmosphere in the city on this special evening will be unforgettable.”

Those non-football fans travelers who are going to visit Cote d’Azur in July this year should pay attention to the increase in tariffs and take them into account in planning the trip, as prices are likely to soar 300%.
