From pronouncing tongue-tying street names to the city’s hidden gems, visitors to Edinburgh can learn how to ‘survive’ the festivals this summer in a handy VisitScotland guide.

The Edinburgh Festivals Survival Guide, produced by the national tourism organisation, has been updated and given an interactive facelift to make the most of the world’s leading festival city in time for the start of the season.

The colourful must-have 45-page e-book is free to download online from visitscotland.com and details a selection of highlights from the eight festivals during June, July and August while offering advice for those visiting on a budget, looking to occupy the kids or seeking an alternative if they miss out on tickets.

Divided into three sections (Be Prepared, On the Ground, Festival Essentials), it reveals what to expect in Edinburgh throughout the season, including unusual show venues such as the city’s famous Jazz Bar for quality live music during the Jazz Festival, Edinburgh Castle for a spectacular light and sound show in Deep Time and Edinburgh Dungeon for a Deadly Dungeon Murder Mystery.

Insider hints and tips such as wearing comfy shoes and starting the day early to secure the best festival tickets sit alongside valuable information on where to eat, what to bring, and how to travel to the city.

Also included in the guide is the history of the festivals, recommended LGBT bars and pubs, where to go if travelling further afield and the 10 most visited attractions.

Julia Amour, Director of Festivals Edinburgh, said:

“Edinburgh’s Festivals transform Scotland’s capital into a world leading cultural destination for visitors from around the globe, and at no time is this more evident than during our peak summer season. So it’s great to see VisitScotland helping festival-goers make the most of their visit with this refreshed guide to Edinburgh’s summer festivals.”

Manuela Calchini, Regional Director at VisitScotland, said:

“Edinburgh’s festivals are a huge part of the visitor experience, and an important contributor to Scottish tourism, with the city streets buzzing with artists, authors, musical acts and comedians over the summer months.

“Our innovative and popular survival guide has been revamped and updated to give international and domestic visitors the lowdown on what there is to see, do, catch and explore in and around the capital this festival season, from Scotland’s biggest celebration of world music and dance to The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

“Whether you are a new or regular festival goer, this free online guide is a must-have to get the best out of the city between June and September.”
