unnamed-26On Foot Holidays – one of Europe’s leading self-guided walking tour operators – has released two brand new routes, which will take travellers to the beautiful Greek Cycladic Islands of Naxos, Amorgos and Andros.

The self-guided, luggage-free hikes are the newest addition to On Foot Holiday’s offering of 28 walking itineraries throughout Europe and the first to feature the Greek Islands. The two new walks are also the first for the company where hikers base themselves in one hotel or pension on each island rather than walk to a different inn each night as on their other 26 walks across Europe.

Andros, Naxos and Amorgos may be less-well known to Australians than other more-visited Greek Islands, but all offer stunning scenery, great walking and a number of memorable cultural sights.

With its beautiful countryside, Andros provides an ideal walking environment. Guests will be based in the old venetian capital of Chora, and use local buses to take them to the start of each day’s walk. Hardy hikers can opt for one or two cross-island walks, with three shorter walks also on offer. Highlights include the Panachradou monastery, the swimmable beaches near Chora, and ruined watermills in the Dipomata valley.

The Andros tour is of medium difficulty, with four to six hours of walking each day. The tour costs from £450 per person, twin-share, and includes five nights’ accommodation, five breakfasts, four packed lunches and some taxi transfers.

The Naxos and Amorgos tour provides two contrasting experiences, with the larger island of Naxos offering a great variety of sights, while the smaller Amorgos is more untouched. On Naxos, guests will stay in the venetian-style Old Town, with its labyrinthine alleys and little blue-and-white shops and restaurants. The local bus service will take guests to the island’s best walking spots, including seeing the half-finished, ancient Greek statues lying in a farmer’s field, pretty mountain villages, and the beach at Lionas, where guests can swim.

On Amorgos, Guests can visit the Monastery of Chozoviotisa, which clings limpet-like to the cliff, followed by a walk along the spine of the island. Two further walks will take travellers through the charming villages of the northern end of the island.

The self-guided tour of Naxos and Amorgos is of easy-medium difficulty, with three to five hours of walking each day. On Foot Holidays suggests April, May, September and October as the best months to take the trip. The tour costs from £350 per person, twin-share, and includes seven nights’ accommodation and three breakfasts.

Based in the UK and specialising in the ‘art of slow travel’, On Foot Holidays offers walkers around the world 28 self-guided tours across unspoilt areas of Europe for independent travellers who prefer intimate encounters with destinations. Walkers can select their own departure dates, luggage is transferred between inns each day for hikers and all routes are designed by locals and tested by staff from On Foot Holidays.
