Governor Cuomo Announces LIRR to Operate On a Weekend Schedule and Metro-North to Operate on a Saturday Schedule

Published on : Saturday, January 4, 2014

MTA-Railway-imageGovernor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad will operate on reduced schedules tomorrow in anticipation of limited ridership during the winter blizzard and dangerous blizzard-like conditions overnight. The Long Island Rail Road will operate on a weekend schedule. Metro-North Railroad will operate on a Saturday schedule (without the trains marked as Shoppers’ Specials).

“The safety of MTA riders and employees is the top priority of the MTA,” said Governor Cuomo. “MTA employees have been out sanding and salting platforms and walkways, but conditions can become difficult quickly during a winter storm. We encourage all who must travel tomorrow to step carefully on platforms and walkways and hold handrails when walking on steps.”

Depending on the time of day, these schedules provide about 60 percent of normal weekday trains.

Tomorrow, as on weekends, the LIRR will not provide TRAIN service on the West Hempstead Branch or east of Ronkonkoma on the Ronkonkoma Branch. Substitute bus service between Ronkonkoma and Greenport will be provided.

Two ferry services operated under contract to Metro-North, the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry and the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry, will not operate tomorrow. Hudson RailLink will operate on a special schedule.

Customers looking for specific train schedules should look to or their printed weekend timetables for the LIRR or Saturday timetables for Metro-North. This information is also available via Metro-North Train Time and LIRR Train Time apps for iOS and Android. The MTA’s homepage at, has been reconfigured so that it is completely devoted to weather-related information.

We urge customers to consider staying home tomorrow. Those looking to travel tomorrow should visit or our mobile apps for the latest service status before heading out and sign up for the latest service alerts via email and text message.
