Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday evening updated New Yorkers on the latest status of the MTA’s regional transportation network in the wake of the winter storm that brought heavy snow and bitter cold to the region.
“The storm may be over, but temperatures will be dropping overnight, and icy conditions can form quickly and can be difficult to see,” Governor Cuomo said. “I urge all New Yorkers to use extra caution when entering and exiting trains and buses, and when walking on station platforms, walkways and staircases.”
In order to allow crews to remove snow and ice from outdoor subway storage yards, subway cars will again be stored on the express tracks of underground tunnels. As a result, all subways will run local tonight. Crews will continue clearing snow from subway yards through the weekend to allow full express service to resume.
All weekend subway track work projects have been canceled, with the exception of the ongoing effort to rebuild the Montague Tube after Superstorm Sandy, and the rehabilitation of Middletown Road and Castle Hill Avenue stations on the 6 Subway Line Icon Line in the Bronx.
New York City Transit has cleared some or all snow and ice from almost all subway stations, and approximately 1,000 employees are continuing to remove snow and ice from stairways and platforms. New York City Transit crews will operate 6 de-icer machines throughout the night to clear snow and ice from outdoor tracks.
Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road will operate regular schedules on Saturday, January 4, with one exception: Metro-North will not operate trains marked in timetables as Shoppers’ Specials. The LIRR will keep waiting rooms open all weekend to protect customers from the bitter cold and wind.
The MTA’s seven bridges and two tunnels remain open to traffic, with Bridge & Tunnels crews working continuously to ensure no slush or ice builds up.
