This year, Wacken starts at Hamburg Airport. On the occasion of the 25th birthday of the Wacken Open Air (WOA) music festival, Hamburg Airport is being transformed into “Wacken Airport”. From 29 July, 2014, festival visitors arriving via Hamburg Airport will be offered a range of services to make their arrival itself a genuine Wacken experience.
A Wacken Reception Area awaits inbound passengers in the arrivals area. They can stand in front of a photo wall for their first photos of the event, charge their smartphones one last time before heading out to the site, and listen to their favourite bands while they do so. Or they can chill in a Wacken beach chair and recharge their own personal batteries for the days ahead.
They are welcomed by Hamburg Airport’s friendly staff, naturally wearing Wacken Airport shirts! Videos or previous Wacken festivals are being shown at the Scoom café bar to get metal fans into the WOA mood. Refreshment and other needs are taken care of with vouchers from several restaurants and shops at Hamburg Airport. Just show your festival ticket to receive discounts on food and drink as well as on such useful items as first aid kits with aspirin, plasters, and earplugs. And your fellow travellers will be happy about the free shower available to festival visitors in the terminal before your return flight! In return, the Wacken Foundation, which supports up and coming new bands, is grateful for every small donation.
Hamburg Airport has always been an important connecting point for visitors to the Wacken festival. Of the 75,000+ visitors each year, some 19,000 are from abroad – from countries such as Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, England, France, Spain, Australia, Norway, Mexico, the USA, and Israel. Between 4,000 and 5,000 get to Wacken by plane, landing at Hamburg Airport.
On top of this there are also the many international bands, flown in to Hamburg Airport from all over the world especially for the festival.
