HKIA Sees Robust Growth In Air Cargo Throughput in September

Hong-Kong-Airport-AuthorityHong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded continuous growth in all three air traffic figures in September 2016. During the month, cargo throughput recorded robust growth of 7.2% to 394,000 tonnes when compared to the same period in 2015. Passenger volume rose by 3.5% to 5.5 million, while flight movements increased by 2.3% to 33,865 year on year.

 

The increase in passenger traffic in September was driven mainly by 7% year-on-year’s growth in Hong Kong resident travel. Passenger traffic to / from Southeast Asia and Japan recorded the most significant increases.

 

Transshipments, which experienced a 15% increase compared to the same month last year, continued to be the main driver of growth in cargo throughput. Traffic to / from key trading regions in North America and Southeast Asia increased most significantly in September.

In addition, HKIA was inducted into the Travel Hall of Fame again at the TTG Travel Awards this year. HKIA has held this honour since 2013, after being voted as the “Best Airport” for 10 consecutive times by the Asia-Pacific travel trade.

 
During the first nine months of 2016, HKIA handled 53.2 million passengers and 308,645 flight movements, an increase of 4.1% and 2.3% respectively from the same period last year. Cargo traffic increased by 1.2% to 3.2 million tonnes.

 
On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA handled 70.6 million passengers, 412,860 flight movements and 4.4 million tonnes of cargo, marking year-on-year increases of 4.9%, 2.5% and 0.9% respectively.
