Hong Kong supports tourism with additional $10 million

Hong Kong Observation WheelSecretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So says the Government will allocate an additional $10 million to launch the Matching Fund Scheme to support the tourism sector.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with the tourism industry today, Mr So said tourist attractions can apply for the fund until October 14. The fund can be used for overseas promotions until March.

Attractions applying for the fund can work with hotels, travel agencies, retailers or airlines to do joint marketing campaigns and offer concessions.

The Tourism Board will approve the applications in October.

Mr So said the overall number of tourists in the first half of September fell 1.7% year-on-year. Mainland visitors dropped 0.2%, while there were 6.4% fewer overseas tourists.

Visitor numbers dropped 0.1% in the first eight months of the year. Tourists from the Mainland rose 0.8%, while non-Mainland visitors fell 3.4%.

Mr So said the tourism industry is entering an adjustment period, due to the comparatively strong exchange rate compared with other Asian countries, slow global economic growth, relaxation of visas in other countries, as well as recent events against Mainland visitors.

Meanwhile, in response to the court judgment regarding the judicial review on the proposed broadcast-type mobile television service of Hong Kong Mobile Television Network, Mr So said the Government welcomes the decision.
