in-cosmetics-Asia-300x118Sophisticated product formulation has never been more vital as beauty consumers demand more from their make-up, skin and haircare routines.

The dual trends of ever more natural/gentle ingredients and the increasingly blurred lines between products – such as haircare and fragrance, means research and development (R&D) continues to push the boundaries of what has been achieved so far.

Indeed latest intelligence from Mintel’s Global New Products Database highlights the fact that the category is moving towards highlighting what’s not in a formula – such as fragrance and dyes, as much as what is. And its beauty and personal care forecast report – Mixologiste, points to multifunctional make-up and skincare as the key mega trend moving forward. Meanwhile new fragrance formulations with added benefits – such as hair perfume with vitamins, pigments and UV filters are set to become standard.

To help foster greater understanding of fast moving R&D trends such as these and to offer practical advice, in-cosmetics Asia is debuting two innovative additions to its show – the Interactive Formulation Laboratory and the Fragrance Zone.

Purely for R&D professionals, formulators and technical experts, the Interactive Formulation Laboratory features a purpose-built, fully-functioning lab showcasing the expertise and practical skills of leading industry players, who also share their technical know-how, plus theory and practical formulation tips.

The interactive demonstrations, running throughout the first two days of the show, feature experts including Belinda Pilmore, Director at the Institute of Personal Care Science, helping visitors get hands-on with the latest ‘green’ silicone replacements from a variety of suppliers; Addison Chung, Senior Marketing Manager at BASF East Asia regional HQ, who will demonstrate SWOP (Switch-Oil-Phase) Emulsion Technology – an innovative process, which turns O/W emulsion into W/O during application to the skin; Rain Shen, Application and Technical Support Manager, Personal Care, Gattefossé, China will explain How to Make a Delightful Texture Formula – creating a moisturising cream with a stunning sensorial feel and visible improved skin appearance; and R&D experts from Lipoid Kosmetik AG – Sales Directors Ulrike Behnke and Dr Bernd Albrecht will talk their audience through making a Unique Deep Moisturising Cream using Hydro-Gain™, a moisturising active based on birch bark extract, barbary fig seed oil and lecithin.

The Fragrance Zone houses the latest fragrance ingredient innovation and developments, making it a one-stop-shop for those looking to uncover new scent trends, as well as gain advice on formulating with fragrance.

The newest materials supplier to add its name to the Fragrance Zone exhibitors is Amerasian Fragrance Research (Thailand), it joins specialist scent and flavour manufacturers Iberchem of Spain and O’Laughlin Industries from Hong Kong, all of which will share their knowledge and expertise, plus be on hand to offer NPD solutions.
Adding fragrance to beauty products is a delicate business. There are technical and formulation challenges including understanding stability, absorption and evaporation, while product safety and efficacy are vital to ensure customer satisfaction.

Speaker Belinda Pilmore, Director at the Institute of Personal Care Science, says: “The Interactive Formulation Laboratory truly brings to life the innovative products and ingredients at the heart of in-cosmetics Asia. Not only does it help the R&D technicians to understand how they can then apply that innovation to their own products, it also gives both speakers and show visitors the chance to discuss applications for various ingredients and share any questions they may have with like-minded professionals in a unique forum of global experts.”
