Royalty visited Eckford on Friday 17 June in the shape of celebrated impressionist and comedian Rory Bremner, who formally launched the newly created “Jubilee Path”.
It is fitting that ‘Prince Charles’ is doing the honours in the year of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations.
Crailing, Eckford & Nisbet Community Council have worked closely with landowners, tenant farmers and the Scottish Borders Council Countryside Ranger Service to develop a path that links up the three villages.
Much of the route is on well established pathways such as St Cuthbert’s Way and the Four Abbeys Way while the two newly added sections join up with these to create a fabulous 12.5 mile circular pathway.
The new sections provide walkers with stunning views after a moderate climb up Wooden Hill and a peaceful setting to take a rest in a beautiful location overlooking the meandering Kale Water. There is good news too for the less ambitious walker as the path can also be tackled in separate sections e.g. Eckford to Jedfoot 6.5 miles, Jedfoot to Kalemouth 4.3 miles, Kalemouth to Eckford 1.7 miles or vice versa.
If walkers choose their times carefully when planning their walk they can incorporate refreshments stops on or very close to the route in the shape of Teviot Smokery, Kirkbank, Eckford and the Caddy Mann at Mounthooly. It is also possible to reach key points on the route using the local ‘hail and ride’ Bus Service 20 which operates between Kelso and Jedburgh.
