Today’s release of the Labour Force Survey figures shows the strength of the hospitality and tourism industry in being at the forefront of the UK’s economic recovery.
The figures show that total employment is up 820,000 over 2013 – of which 120,000 jobs (15%) where attributable to the UK hospitality and tourism industry.
With 39% of these new jobs going to people under the age of 30, the growth of the UK hospitality and tourism industry is also one of the leading factors in the 20% reduction in youth unemployment that is highlighted in today’s announcement.
Ufi Ibrahim, Chief Executive of the British Hospitality Association and the Chairman of the Tourism Alliance stated, “over the last 5 years the UK tourism industry has shown that it is world leader, generating significantly increased export earnings and employment for the UK economy that has helped to pull the country out of recession. What we need now is to work with Government to develop policies on issues such as VAT, APD and visas that build on this performance”.
2013 was a record year for the UK inbound tourism industry with 33m people visiting and spending £21bn in the UK economy. ONS’s International Passenger Survey figures show that visitor numbers to the UK this year are up a further 7% so far this year indicating that they will be a further significant increase in tourism-related employment.
