Metro de Madrid has achieved earnings of 28 million euro thanks to the sale of 73 Series 6000 cars to Metro de Buenos Aires. To this amount they have to add 4.6 million euro for technical assistance for their placement into service in the Argentinean capital, in what is the third sale of rolling stock to this country and the largest made to any metro. The commitment to operations of this kind, which represent an important source of income, along with a reduction of costs in the Company, has enabled public transport fares to be frozen for the first time in thirty years in the Community of Madrid.

The Regional President, Ignacio González, underlined that the excellent results of the overseas campaign by Metro in his visit to the Company’s central repair shops at Canillejas, from where shipment of trains to the Argentinean capital got under way with the first three units of the lot. As the head of the Regional Executive pointed out, this new sale is a splendid example of the international interest aroused by Metro de Madrid, which has now become a benchmark company for its commitment to innovation, service quality and control of expenditure.

The rail cars departing from Canillejas have been fully adapted to the features of the Buenos Aires Underground system, as specified in the transaction arranged with Subterráneos de Buenos Aires Sociedad del Estado, SBASE. The agreement also includes the supply of ancillary services, besides the technical assistance needed for the commissioning of the new cars in Buenos Aires.

In all, Metro de Madrid will obtain earnings of 32.6 million euro from this transaction, which forms part of the Company’s efforts to increase its revenues in order to lower its financial cost for all Madrilenians. In this respect, González emphasized the saving of 12 million euro with energy efficiency measures, the 40 million from earnings on assets, or the 11 million from commercial income, which will all be recorded this year.

This delivery forms part of the third operation of this type carried out with SBASE, after the purchase of two lots of Series 5000 rolling stock in 2011 and 2012. They are Series 6000 cars that were in service on Line 9 of the Madrid Underground and which will be running on Line B in Buenos Aires. With just 15 years service they are in a perfect state of repair and they provide an excellent level of service with regard to availability and reliability ratios.

These units will be replaced at Metro de Madrid with Series 7000, 8000 and 9000 cars of the latest technology. In this respect, Ignacio González stressed that the average service life of Madrid trains, 12 years, is the lowest of the principal metro systems in the world and that no Underground system has undertaken an enlargement of its network on a par with that carried out in Madrid in the last 10 years.

The purchase of the Series 6000 units is supplemented with the undertaking of the maintenance jobs for this material, as well as a series of additional assignments in order to tailor the rolling stock to Buenos Aires operating conditions, including for instance adjustment of the track gauge and removal of the signalling, radio telephone and video surveillance systems.

Once in Buenos Aires, the external appearance of the trains will be brought into line with the livery of the Argentinean Underground and installation of the signalling and radio communications systems, servicing of components and final commissioning of the units will all be carried out.

The Metro de Madrid Project Consultancy Area is the line of business responsible for marshalling and processing the Company’s know-how in order to turn it into different integrated mobility solutions and be in a position to market it in countries where it is needed right now for their transport line building or renovation projects.
