Monorail service of Tamil Nadu to increase and enable connectivity within state

Tamil NaduIn a bid to facilitate connectivity and moderate passenger pressure between northwest of Chennai to the far south of Tamil Nadu, the government has realigned the monorail route that will connect Poonamallee within the northwest of Chennai and Vandalur far south through two corridors which will intersect at Kathipara.

The first corridor will measure 21km linking Poonamallee and Kathipara, via Kumaranchavadi, Porur and Nandambakkam, with a wishbone line forking off to Vadapalani. The government of Tamil Nadu has already issued tenders for the project and work is expected to start from August.

Officials of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) of Tamil Nadu, the agency executing the project, said monorail will provide a mass transit system to the densely populated Porur along the first corridor and, on the second line, Medavakkam, neighbourhoods bypassed by MRTS and the suburban rail network.

The alignment of the second corridor will be announced by the government between Vandalur and Kathipara, via Perungalathur, Irumbuliyur, Tambaram East, Sembakkam, Medavakkam and Velacherry.

The MTC official said the first corridor will meet the metro rail corridors at Vadapalani and Kathipara. The second will meet the main MRTS depot at Tambaram and metro rail corridor at Kathipara.

The monorail will definitely make communication easier and faster for the locals and tourists in Tamil Nadu. Also it will improve the business prospects of the city and make the city more environmentally friendly by aiding in transportation and people might just do away with their private vehicles and start taking to public transport with this fast and easy transportation option. If the government integrates the ticketing systems and information services for monorail, metro rail and MRTS then its public demand will naturally improve.
