New Unique Venue for Seoul To Become Design Industry Headquarters

seoul-venueSeoul will welcome the highly anticipated Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) on March 21st, when the new unique venue opens in the city’s central district. The Dongdaemun area is the focal point of the Korean design industry, and the DDP will be a key venue for design-related conferences, exhibitions and shows, although the facilities will also be available for other types of business events and gatherings as well.
Designed by architect Zaha Hadid, the Dongdaemun Design Plaza’s meeting facilities include 2 exhibition halls (total of 3,108m²), 2 convention halls (total of 4,540m²) and a conference hall (414m²). Event participants will also have access to several luxury-class accommodation hotels – the closest of which will be the new JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square – Seoul’s second Marriott property – and which will offer 170 guest rooms when it opens next month.

The Dongdaemun district has long been the focal point of the Korean design industry – most famously celebrated every spring and autumn during Seoul Fashion Week – and is a popular shopping destination for retail, wholesale, and boutique vendors of various design-related goods. The district is named after the still-surviving Dongdaemun, or ‘Great East Gate’ of ancient Seoul’s city walls.
The arrival of both the DDP and the new JW Marriott fall within Phase 1 of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s ‘Master Plan’ to dramatically boost the city’s business events infrastructure over the coming decades. A key element of the plan involves dividing Seoul into ‘MICE Zones’, with the aforementioned venues forming part of the ‘Central Seoul MICE Zone’, which will also gain a new convention center in the Seoul Station area by 2018.
