Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) officials welcomed All Nippon Airways (ANA) executives to Miami International Airport on June 27, where the two sides continued ongoing discussions regarding potential passenger service between Tokyo and Miami.

The Miami meeting followed talks earlier this month in Dublin, Ireland, at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit – the world’s largest gathering of airline leaders. ANA was one of 11 airlines that MDAD officials met with during the IATA AGM, which drew more than 1,000 delegates. MIA was one of only a handful of airports in the world invited to attend IATA’s invitation-only event.

According to Sabre Global Demand Data, Miami is America’s largest business and leisure market for Asia travel without nonstop service, with 290,480 connecting passengers to and from Asia in 2015. More than 40,000 passengers traveled between Tokyo and Miami in 2015 via connecting flights, making Japan’s capital Miami’s second-busiest Asian destination.

“We were honored to welcome ANA’s representatives to Miami, and to continue sharing information regarding the viability and profitability of a Miami-Tokyo route,” said MDAD Director Emilio T. González. “Now that fuel-efficient aircraft exists to make long-haul flights from Asia to Miami both possible and profitable, along with MIA’s extensive route network throughout the Americas, there is vast potential for first-ever nonstop passenger service.”

According to All Nippon Airways, ANA is the largest airline in Japan by revenues and passenger numbers. Founded in 1952, ANA now flies on 81 international routes and 112 domestic routes. The ANA group has 35,000 employees and a fleet of about 240 aircraft. In 2016, ANA was named a 5-Star airport for the fourth consecutive year by the world’s leading airline and airport review site, Skytrax. ANA is also the launch customer and biggest operator of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
