The Peruvian Ministry of Defence has announced it will purchase 24 Mi-171Sh helicopters from Russia in a bid to step up the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism.
The purchase of these transport and assault helicopters includes a flight simulator, a training package for Peruvian pilots and the establishment of a regional centre for helicopter maintenance and repair in Peru.
This centre will begin operations in the first quarter of 2016 and two years later it will be expanded for larger operations.
The Russian helicopters, which are capable of operating in areas of difficult access, will be used by the Peruvian Armed Forces in the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers – a region known as VRAEM.
The first helicopters will arrive in Peru in the second half of 2014, with the remainder following in 2015.
The Peruvian Air Force operates a total of 16 Mi-25 and Mi-35P helicopters.
