Passengers planning to fly from Pittsburgh International Airport this Thanksgiving should be advised that inclement weather could impact their flight. In addition to this week being the busiest travel week of the year, snow and ice has been forecasted for Western Pennsylvania Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning.
All air travelers are reminded to check your flight’s status at the airline’s website, FlyPittsburgh.com or on the PIT airport mobile app (download the mobile app for free for iPhone or iPad from iTunes.com and Android devices from Google Play Store). Passengers are also advised to arrive early and to check with the Transportation Security Administration at TSA.gov for packing tips and to review the prohibited items lists. The Alternate Security Checkpoint at Pittsburgh International Airport, located across the Commercial Departures Roadway outside of the Ticketing Level of the Landside Terminal is open from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. Typically the checkpoint is the busiest between 4:30 to 7:30 am, 10 am to 1 pm, and 4 to 6 pm on most days.
Employees of the Allegheny County Airport Authority are preparing to implement the Snow and Ice Control Plan. The operations and maintenance departments in coordination with the FAA Air Traffic Control Tower and airline personnel participate in briefings with the weather service to get the latest information about the approaching storm.
Here are some other important tips to remember when traveling during the 2013 Holiday Season:
Arrive at the airport two hours prior to your flight.
Keep valuables, medicine and other important items in your carry-on luggage.
Wear easily removable shoes and coats.
Prepare for heavy highway traffic and plan accordingly.
Identify each bag with your name, address and contact number.
Do not travel with wrapped gifts. Wrapped items might have to be unwrapped during security screenings. Consider shipping wrapped gifts to your destination before you travel.
Other key items: Pack snow globes and toy guns in your checked bags. Familiarize yourself with the TSA’s guidelines for carry-on luggage at www.tsa.gov.
Pittsburgh International Airport’s Cell Phone parking lot is located within the airport’s Extended Parking lot and those coming to airport are urged to follow signs to extended parking to access the cell phone. Parking in the Extended Lots is free for the first hour of parking.
