Amtrak-logo-300x124 (1)With a freshly-renovated and repainted waiting room, newlyinstalled heating system on the passenger concourse, modified vehicle traffic pattern and customized train schedule with more travel options, the Lancaster Amtrak station is ready for the busy holiday season.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, PennDOT contractors have opened a temporary exit that enables the reopening of the station’s eastern driveway, allowing motorists to once again pick up and drop off passengers directly in front of the station’s main entrance. The new traffic pattern will remain in place until at least January 6, 2014. The eastern driveway had been closed earlier this year to accommodate PennDOT’s Lititz Pike Bridge replacement project.

In conjunction with PennDOT, Amtrak is also offering additional travel options in the form of extra trains and additional coaches on the Keystone Service between November 26 and December 2. Due to heavy demand, all Keystone Service trains will be reserved during this time and with the possibility of inclement weather in the forecast, anyone considering adjusting their travel plans is advised to book soon, as many trains have already sold out. A customized timetable is available on the Amtrak website.

Passengers utilizing the Lancaster Station during the holiday will find freshly repaired and
repainted walls in the main waiting room, refurbished benches, a newly installed heating system on the pedestrian concourse and other improvements made as part of the $3.5 million Amtrakfunded Capstone project. Historic clocks, donated by Brent Miller Jewelers, welcome passengers at the station’s main entrance, in the waiting room and on the train platforms.

In Fiscal Year 2013 (which ended September 30, 2013), Lancaster passed Harrisburg to become the second busiest Amtrak station in Pennsylvania, serving 578,731 passengers, and contributing to a record-setting year for America’s Railroad®. 31.6 million people chose Amtrak in FY 2013, a 1% increase over the prior year.
