Following completion of business the NITB board members enjoyed a tour of phase II of Nomadic’s restoration, which includes the creation of an authentic visitor experience on board and access to the Pump House and the Hamilton Graving Dock, the exact spot where the ship was originally fitted out over 100 years ago and where she is now permanently berthed.
Northern Ireland Tourist Board Chairman, Howard Hastings, said: “As a result of the funding that has been invested into phase II by NITB, SEUPB, HLF and DSD, I am confident that the visitor experience on board the Nomadic and at the dockside will be exceptional. This vessel is alive with the legacy of Titanic and will offer a totally unique and authentic experience to add to what is already in Titanic Quarter.
“The Board was particularly pleased to see that the storylines for the interpretation of the ship have been carefully researched and developed using experts to keep the content accurate, relevant, engaging and robust. The experiences will tap into the hearts and minds of the visitors, inviting them to connect with Nomadic’s unique story.”
One of the world’s most important historic ships, Nomadic was purpose-built in Belfast by Harland and Wolff as the first- and second-class passenger tender to the White Star Line giants, Olympic and Titanic.
On 10 April 1912 she served Titanic on her one and only visit to Cherbourg, France, ferrying luminaries such as John Jacob Astor, Margaret (Molly) Brown.
She later carried a host of Hollywood stars including Charlie Chaplin, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton to such famous luxury liners as Oceanic, Olympic, Caronia, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth.
