Thailand3 (1)Thailand announced a dip in trade with the highest drop in imports in more than four years in January and a fall in number of visitors.

The slump is due the ongoing anti-government protests.

In many places including Bangkok, weeks of turmoil, have been intermittent by occasional bombs and gunfire.

Report says imports fell 15.5 percent in January from a year earlier, which is the major drop since October 2009.

Imports of computers and parts were down 19 percent from a year earlier, parts off 31.8 percent and consumer goods 5.3 percent. Exports also dropped 2 percent.

The political disturbances since November and a slump in the number of visitors Thailand have added to the problems of the struggling flag carrier.

The Thai Hotel Association said this month that occupancy rates in Bangkok were floating at around 50 percent, fine below the usual 80 percent at this time of year.

Thai Airways International announced a huge net loss of $369 million for 2013, including a loss of 5.65 billion in the final three months of the year. More loss is already to be expected for 2014.
