ttfThe South Australian economy will receive a major boost as visitors flock to Adelaide and surrounds for the Santos Tour Down Under, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).
Now in its 16th year, the Santos Tour Down Under will run from 19 – 26 January in Adelaide and regional South Australia.
TTF Chief Executive Ken Morrison said this unique event makes a significant contribution to the visitor economy.
“The 2013 Santos Tour Down Under generated $43.6 million for the local economy, helping support the 33,000 direct tourism jobs and 18,000 tourism businesses across the state,” said Mr Morrison.
“South Australia’s events calendar helps deliver year-round visitation and the government should be congratulated on the growing success of this international event.
“Kicking off South Australia’s major event schedule each year, the Santos Tour Down Under provides another opportunity to highlight the regional tourism product and food and wine experiences throughout South Australia.
“Major events provide a reason for people to travel and many will extend their trip either side of the Tour taking the opportunity to explore more of South Australia’s regional offering as well.
“South Australia is a popular destination choice for European visitors and this sporting event resonates well with this market.
“In 2013, 40,000 interstate and international visitors joined the local crowd to total 757,000 spectators.
“The event also received over 306 hours of broadcast on television channels internationally, a great international profiling opportunity for the state and Australia.
“The event has been on the up since its inception and is now a major driver of visitation to the state, with its consistency central to its success and growing popularity.
“Joining the UCI WorldTour in 2008 was a significant win for the event and as a result the Santos Tour Down Under is now recognised as the official opening meet of the international professional cycling season, a great privilege and honour for South Australia,” said Mr Morrison.
