Tourism hit as South Korea suffers from MERS threat

MERS-GettyTwo have died in South Korea and at least 25 have been infected with the deadly MERS-CoV in South Korea. The Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome coronavirusis is spreading rapidly in the South Korean region according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention.

 

The sudden panic and concern have brought many cancellations from Chinese visitors who often come to South Korea to buy cosmetics.

 

The cancellation of travel plans have hit the travel and hospitality industry greatly as hotels that often harboured these tourists like Hotel Shilla, Lotte Tour Development have suffered losses as bookings had to be canceled.

 

Also cosmetic firms Amorepacific Corp and LG Household & Health Care who specially cater to Chinese tourists have suffered setbacks due to the cancellations.

 

South Korea has been accused of not being serious in their response to the MERS virus as they let a man who was under quarantine travel to China via Hong Kong.

 

The number of Chinese tourists to Korea last year jumped 42 percent to 6.1 million.
