TOURISM INDUSTRY TO CONVENE IN MADISON FOR ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Published on : Tuesday, February 5, 2013

It’s all about fun. That’s the theme when approximately 1,000 people from Wisconsin’s tourism industry will become travelers in their own state when they arrive in Madison for the Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Tourism, March 17-19. Special guests include Governor Walker, Hollywood director David Zucker, actor Robert Hays and a line-up of outstanding speakers and educational programming. The event is at the Monona Terrace Convention Center and online registration is now available.

The annual conference draws from all sectors of the state’s tourism industry including destination marketing organizations, hoteliers, innkeepers, campgrounds, restaurateurs, attraction operators, arts and cultural venues, tourism educators, media, and other hospitality representatives. The event was last held in Madison in 2005.

“Every speaker, presentation and networking event was selected to help the state’s tourism industry work smarter, better and support our brand of fun,” Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett notes. “This event is about supporting small businesses and communities that rely on tourism so in turn they can be successful, ultimately adding jobs and growing the economy for Wisconsin.”

Agenda, registration and information on accommodations can be found at www.wigcot.org. Participants who register before Feb. 22 receive a $50 discount toward their registration fee.

In addition, all registrants have the chance to win a private breakfast with Zucker, his “Airplane!” star Robert Hays and Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett. Zucker, the comedic mastermind behind the “Naked Gun” movies and “Airplane!,” directed Hays in the Department’s newest summer TV spot, which will debut at the conference.

Governor Walker and Secretary Klett kick off the event with an opening address on Monday morning highlighting significant events and achievements from last year as well as sharing their vision for tourism and the role it plays in the state’s economy.

Governor Walker will also wrap up the conference by presenting The Governor’s Tourism Awards at Tuesday evening’s closing dinner. Sponsored by the Governor’s Council on Tourism, the awards recognize and honor people and organizations that have made a significant impact on Wisconsin’s tourism industry.

The mission of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism is to market the state as the Midwest’s premier travel destination for fun. By executing industry-leading marketing programs, providing reliable travel information and establishing strategic partnerships, the Department plays a significant role in delivering exceptional customer service and generating greater economic impact and jobs for Wisconsin.
