The highly anticipated ‘Tourist Arrival Countdown’ music extravaganza took place in Male, the capital city of the Maldives, on 8th January 2015 at the National Football Stadium.
Thousands of visitors attended the event, during which they enjoyed a live performance from five-time, Grammy-nominated R&B sensation Akon who has sold over 40 million albums worldwide. Visitors were also treated to a guest appearance by the award-winning Bollywood star and international recording artist Ms Priyanka Chopra, who made a special appearance during the event during which she presented awards to key players in the Maldivian tourism industry.
The Tourist Arrival Countdown 2015 is one of the largest music events held in the history of the nation, with guests enjoying live music by international and local artists, a spectacular fireworks display and laser shows.
The event followed the annual Tourist Arrival Countdown Show on New Year’s Eve 2014, during which the Minister of Tourism, Honorable Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, announced the Maldives’ new target to reach 1.4 million tourists during 2015. During 2014, tourist arrivals to the Maldives increased by 7.1% compared to 2013, reaching a total of 1,204,857 tourists including an increase of visitor numbers of 3.1% from the UK, the second largest market in Europe.
