ttf (3)The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race will provide a significant boost to Victoria’s tourism industry when some of the world’s best cycling teams converge on the state in early 2015, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

TTF Acting Chief Executive Trent Zimmerman said events like the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race are major drawcards which attract visitors and boost the local economy.

“The popularity of cycling has grown significantly in recent years and this event will extend the professional cycling season and build on Victoria’s reputation as a global sporting capital,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“The race will showcase some of Australia’s most stunning natural landscapes along the Great Ocean Road through Barwon Heads, Thirteenth Beach, Torquay, Bells Beach and Geelong, providing a platform to promote the region around the world.

“Major sporting events are essential for the visitor economy, providing a reason for people to travel and helping to stimulate spending across accommodation, retail, entertainment, dining, and transport.

“TTF’s latest report, Backing Major Events, highlights the importance of major events as drivers of visitation and shows that Australians support governments getting behind the development and staging of major events to help grow Australia’s tourism industry.

“Tourism creates employment and economic activity across Victoria, delivering $19.1 billion in Gross State Product in 2012-13 and supporting 201,000 jobs statewide.

“TTF congratulates the Victorian government and Victorian Major Events Company for the innovation and vision in creating this event and building on state’s strong events calendar.”
