TTF – Opal Deal A Gem For Airport Workers

Published on : Wednesday, August 20, 2014

ttf (2)The announcement of a deal that caps the Station Access Fee to $21 a week for people who use their Opal card to travel to Sydney Airport by train more than once in a week is great news for airport staff and regular travellers, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

The NSW government has today announced the cap as part of a $10 million agreement with Airport Link Company, the private operator of the domestic and international terminal stations at Sydney Airport.

TTF Acting Chief Executive Trent Zimmerman said the deal addresses a serious issue.
“Workers at Sydney Airport were facing a significant additional burden in the form of the
station access fee, but this arrangement means that they will not be penalised for choosing to use an Opal card,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“More airport workers using public transport means lower congestion for other airport users.

“The new deal echoes the current arrangement for paper tickets, with a $21 weekly cap on the station access fee, however it is now much more flexible and does not require upfront
payment.

“It also means that frequent travellers now stand to benefit as well if they make more than two trips to the airport in a week.

“However, the high cost of the station access fee is stifling patronage growth on the Airport rail line for air travellers and adding to traffic congestion around the airport.

“Cutting the cost of a rail ticket to the airport will make it more competitive with other modes of transport and attract more people to use the service.

“We hope this announcement from the New South Wales government is just the first step
towards the removal of the station access fee from the service altogether.

“The number of people flying in and out of Sydney continues to grow and having accessible and affordable public transport options is critical to managing this rising demand.”
