The tour operator TUI has granted the title of “2014 Environment Champion” (TUI Umwelt Champion) to 15 hotels from the RIU chain located in Spain and Portugal. These prestigious awards are given annually to hotels for their outstanding commitment to the environment and sustainability.
Since they were first given in 1996, the main goal of the “TUI Umwelt Champion” awards has been to recognise the achievements of those hotels that meet the technical and organisational requirements of sustainable and responsible hotel management, focussing on areas such as energy and water savings. Hotels that receive the title have passed an assessment process involving points awarded by official auditors; this reflects their environmental and social commitment and includes the opinions of guests, collected by means of surveys.
This year, RIU has managed to obtain four times the number of awards it did last year, showing the increasing environmental commitment within the hotel chain. Furthermore, these awards represent fulfilment of RIU’s Social Corporate Responsibility strategic plan, which states as one of its priorities the certification of all its hotels with prestigious international sustainability awards.
