TUI Netherlands’ is the proud winner of both the ‘ Overall Responsible Tourism Award’ and the ‘Best for child protection’ award at the World Responsible Tourism Awards at the World Travel Market (WTM). TUI Netherlands is part of the Mainstream Sector in TUI Travel PLC, one of the world’s leading leisure travel companies. Intrepid Travel, part of TUI Travel’s Specialist and Activity Sector, was also ‘ Highly Commended’ for its work in child protection also.
These awards come following the Group wide work in developing child protection policies and strategies working with many partners such as ECPAT, Plan International and The Code. The TUI Netherlands awards came as a result of its long-term commitment to the cause: in implementing colleague training and developing policies to protect children at every step, including partners and suppliers. Its child protection campaign in Brazil was another highlight, which helps vulnerable adolescents find a job in the tourism industry and raise awareness of child protection issues amongst travellers.
Harold Goodwin, Professor of Responsible Tourism and chair of judges said, “TUI Netherlands was chosen due to the scale of its achievement in child protection, an area of responsible tourism which many are reluctant to address. The judges were impressed by TUI Netherlands’ willingness to raise this sensitive issue with their clients and Dutch travellers in general, in order to urge them to take action and to report their suspicions when abroad. The overall holistic approach was highly replicable and we hope that others will emulate TUI Netherlands’ leadership.”
Peter Long, Chief Executive of TUI Travel said ‘We are very proud of the success of both TUI Netherlands and Intrepid Travel today, who have represented the Group’s on-going commitment to sustainability with fantastic results. We will continue to push the issues surrounding sustainability, and hope to continue to receive such positive recognition for these efforts. I would like to say a huge thank-you to everyone involved’.
This is one further demonstration of TUI Travel’s leadership of responsible tourism within the group’s sustainability agenda, as seen in the latest Sustainable Holidays Report published in August this year. The report measures the Company’s commitment to its four over-arching goals. These are to operate Europe’s most fuel-efficient airlines and reduce carbon on the ground by 20,000 tonnes; to take 10 million customers on ‘greener and fairer’ holidays; and to be considered a leader in sustainable holidays by colleagues and customers.
