Spratly IslandWith China making ambitious plans to encroach within Vietnam territory the presence of military ships and aircraft in the South China Sea are a common sight. But Vietnam is offering for some of its civilians about 180 of them a six day tour of the reefs in the disputed Spratly Island more familiar to Vietnamese as Truong Sa where they can engage in fishing, sightseeing, like visiting the local light house or simply enjoying the mouthwatering spreads of local seafood.

It is a six day tour of two reefs that lets 180 Vietnamese take a cruise trip according to the Ho Chi Minh City government website.

Citizens of Vietnam feel that it is a matter of national pride to visit Truong Sa. With this new touring facility tourists will no longer feel that they are far away from Truong Sa Ocean.

The island boasts of 300 species of wonderful reef in vibrant colours. Watching the sunrise and set over the ocean amounts to quite an experience for visitors.

This move is likely to strain relationships with China as they claim that 90 per cent of Spratly archipelago belongs to them. China’s big daddy approach has provoked many protests in the past in Vietnam. China has little regard for the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and had decided to erect an oil rig within Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone. It has its own line of demarcations with its Nine-Dash Line.

Vietnam’s move is likely to trigger some controversy but China too offers cruise to tourists in the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea. It is a four day trip where Chinese tourists can see smaller reefs in disputed waters.
