GNTBGermany ranks 7th on the UNWTO’s list of international tourism destinations and 2nd on the Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index 2013

New York, December 9, 2013 – Again this year, Germany ranks high on the popularity scale among travellers as a sought after destination in Europe and the world. Anticipating record numbers of more than one billion travellers worldwide going beyond their countries’ borders in 2013, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) prognosis supports Germany’s positive trend for incoming tourism.
The past two years’ high volume increase in international guests accounts for Germany’s rise, in 2012, to 7th on the UNWTO’s list of international tourism destinations. “To see the tremendous growth development of the past few years continue into this year is true testimony to the success of Destination Germany”, says Ernst Burgbacher, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, responsible for tourism and affairs of Germany.
American overnights up by 1.4%
The latest figures released by Germany’s Federal Statistics Office representing guests staying in German hotels with ten and more beds support this trend, reporting an increase of four percent in foreign overnights for the first nine months of the year over the same period in 2012. Americans contributed with a 1.4 per cent increase for January to September 2013.
“Again in 2013, Destination Germany enjoys solid growth, exhibiting continued top performance. In times of international economic and financial crisis, Germany is one of a few countries only to have succeeded in showing increases in tourism numbers that are well above those of many other European destinations”, says the German National Tourist Board’s CEO Petra Hedorfer.
Destination Germany ranks second on Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index
Destination Germany is not only one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, but is also growing in popularity worldwide. Germany was ranked second in the Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index 2013 – a survey which measures and compares the reputation of 50 countries, cementing Germany’s position as one of the most attractive destinations worldwide. USA was in first place, with Great Britain ranking third.
According to the new results of the survey, Germany is seen as an authentic, trustworthy and modern nation, and ranks highly in questions of economics, government and innovation. Germany also ranks highly as a cultural destination, taking fifth place.
“Especially pleasing is that Germany has jumped one place in the tourism destination ranking to eighth place overall. The popularity of Destination Germany has been further confirmed by this excellent ranking,” states Petra Hedorfer.
The Index is based on a survey which has been undertaken in 20 countries around the world since 2008. Those surveys give statements about six categories: Export, Governance, Culture, People, Tourism and Immigration/Investment.
