A newly released report from the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) reveals the Nashville International Airport (BNA) and John C. Tune Airport (JWN) contribute more than $3.5 billion in total economic impact on the Middle Tennessee economy and nearly 38,000 jobs.
The report quantified the economic benefits generated by passenger, air cargo and general aviation activities at Nashville International and John C. Tune including jobs, earnings, revenues and taxes. The study was conducted by Martin and Associates of Lancaster, Penn., and was commissioned by MNAA.
“Middle Tennessee is experiencing an exciting time of growth,” Rob Wigington, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, said. “As one of the largest economic engines in the region, we’re incredibly proud to contribute to the region’s prosperity and economic development.”
In 2012, domestic and international business travel accounted for nearly 63 percent of visitor traffic at BNA. On average, business travelers spent approximately $200 per day, and total business revenue from BNA visitors contributed more than $12 million impact on the local economy.
“We’re watching new companies enter the Middle Tennessee market and others are looking closely at whether it makes sense to have a presence here,” Wigington said. “This region’s ability to attract new jobs depends in part on our ability to connect to markets across the U.S. and around the world. The findings in this study show us just how important that job is.
“It’s clear the airport is a major contributor to the local economy and plays an important role in future growth. As Middle Tennessee’s economy continues to grow, we’ll aggressively push for new flights to new markets.”
BNA currently serves 50 nonstop markets with 380 daily flights. BNA has recently added flights to Los Angeles, Boston, Seattle and Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Pensacola, Newark, Cancun and New York-LaGuardia. Last year, BNA served more than 10 million passengers, the airport’s heaviest traffic level since 1993.
