In a catastrophic train accident, 23 passengers were killed and several injured as an AC coach of the Bangalore-Nanded express caught fire early on Saturday morning near Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh.
According to the latest reports, the casualties may go up. The fire broke out due to a speculated short circuit and the presence of inflammable objects in the bogie. There were 72 passengers in the bogie.
The train had left Bangalore at 10:45 pm yesterday. A few people jumped out of the train on noticing the fire. Railway Minister Mallikaarjun Kharge called the incident tragic and unfortunate and expressed his condolences for the family of the bereaved passengers.
The Railway Minister, Mallikaarjun Kharge, has instituted an inquiry into the Andhra accident. The government announced a death compensation of Rs. 5 lakh. For people suffering grievous injuries Rs. 1 lakh and for minor injuries, Rs. 50,000 will be granted.
