The two quarreling unions that represent flight attendants at the new American Airlines Inc. have reached an agreement that spells out who will represent those employees as American combines its workforce with that of merger partner US Airways Inc.
The deal, announced also sets out how the 24,000 flight attendants of the merged carrier will approach talks for a single contract under the deal.
The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents pre-merger American employees, will be the bargaining agent for the post-merger airline.
The two unions will petition the National Mediation Board for a “single carrier determination” within six months.
APFA and the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represents US Airways flight attendants, will take the best parts of each other’s current contracts into talks with management for a combined contract.
Only a few weeks ago, talks had broken down as APFA leadership accused the AFA leaders of reneging on previous agreements on how they would work together. But Friday’s announcement was nothing but compliments.
APFA president Laura Glading said in a joint press release that it looks like the only thing left on the checklist now is getting the industry-leading contract we deserve.

One of the sticking points this fall was that AFA members weren’t happy that they would be bound by agreements APFA had made with US Airways and American management before the merger. Holmin addressed that in his statement.
