Messe-Frankfurt-300x161BA students at ESMOD Berlin international fashion school will be designing clothing collections for German Pavilion staff at Expo 2015 in Milan as part of an exclusive in-house competition.

Dietmar Schmitz, Commissioner General of the German Pavilion and Head of the Division for Trade Fair Policy and Expo Participation at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi): “Throughout Expo 2015 in Milan, up to 250 hosts and hostesses will be the face of the German Pavilion. This means that the way they look and the clothes they wear are of the utmost importance. In the interests of promoting up-and-coming talent, we have commissioned the students at ESMOD Berlin to design clothing for our pavilion staff. This also allows us to showcase the creative, young and surprising side of Germany – particularly in the field of fashion – during the Expo in Italy.”

The competition is scheduled to begin in mid-January with a kick-off meeting for briefing students and will end in mid-June when the winning collection is selected by a panel of judges consisting of representatives from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the pavilion management team, Messe Frankfurt’s Textiles & Textile Technologies business field and the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The winning design will be unveiled to the public at the Greenshowroom, organised by Messe Frankfurt in Berlin between 8 and 10 July 2014.

True to the Expo slogan “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, the sustainability of the material and the production techniques used for the pavilion clothing will be of central importance.

At the time of writing, no fewer than 141 countries and other organisations from all over the world will be presenting their future concepts at Expo 2015 in Milan between 1 May and 31 October 2015.

The German Pavilion currently expects some 15,000 visitors every day. A total of 20 million people are expected to visit Expo 2015 in Milan.

Background information on the German Pavilion at the 2015 World Exhibition in Milan
Large-scale, universal world exhibitions are held every five years in rotation with smaller expos. The upcoming World Expo in Milan follows Shanghai (2010), Aichi (2005) and Hanover (2000). Expo 2015 showcases the theme “Feeding the planet, energy for life”. It dispenses with prestigious monumental buildings, presenting itself rather as a sustainable Agrofood Park. The German Pavilion has the motto “Fields of Ideas”.

On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, Messe Frankfurt has been entrusted with the organisation and running of the German Pavilion at EXPO 2015 in Milan. The design, planning and realisation of the German Pavilion have been taken on by the ARGE, a consortium made up of Milla & Partner (Stuttgart), Schmidhuber (Munich) and Nüssli Deutschland (Roth near Nuremberg). Milla & Partner is responsible for the content concept as well as the design of the exhibition and media. Schmidhuber is responsible for the pavilion’s spatial concept, its architecture and general planning and Nüssli for project management and construction. The Expo site is being built close to the existing Milan exhibition centre.

The world exhibition will remain open for six months – from 1 May to 31 October 2015.

The ESMOD Berlin international fashion school was founded in Berlin in 1994. Since September 2011, it has offered a state-recognised six-semester BA in “Fashion Design and Pattern Making/Draping” in both German and English. Over an intensive three-year programme, some 200 students from 38 different countries are studying to be professional designers.

The “Fashion Design and Pattern Making/Draping” course is closely supervised by ESMOD professors and lecturers and also features guest lectures by key players in the fashion industry and other relevant fields. By taking part in a wide range of hands-on workshops, students also learn the skills they need to launch a successful career in the fashion industry.

In the last two years, ESMOD Berlin joined forces with leading names such as Esprit, Arte, Laurèl, Patrick Mohr, Bench and Veruschka Gräfin von Lehndorff as well as with the Institut Français de la Mode Paris (IFM), Shenkar University in Tel Aviv and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.

With its interdisciplinary and holistic outlook, the “Sustainability in Fashion” masters degree initiated by ESMOD Berlin is an innovative addition to the international academic scene with a sustainable positioning from an ecological, ethical, social and economic perspective. The one-year masters programme is taught in English.
