Positively-Pasifika-Festival-2014The “Positively Pasifika Festival 2014” organized by Wellington City Council on 18 January showcased ‘Fijian Made’ handicrafts which attracted special interest from all the visitors.

Finely woven baskets, mats and intricately designed masi took pride of place at the Fiji High Commission exhibition at the Fiji ‘village’. These items, carrying the “Fijian Crafted” brand were sourced from producers in Fiji in collaboration with the Fiji Arts Council.

Also supporting the display was veteran craftswoman, Seniloli Salata who was on site demonstrating the use of “magimagi” for items of adornment.

Fiji’s High Commission acting head of mission Ms Mere Tora said it was the first time that the mission was participating at such an event.

This is a great way to promote ‘Fijian Made’ products to the wider community and seeing its promising response the festival will put on a wider display in the future said Ms Mere Tora. She feels that the Fijian craft can benefit from this festival.

Positively Pasifika Festival is into its sixth year. It is a much awaited annual event of display of Pacific songs and dances, crafts and traditional food. It is Wellington’s way of acknowledging and celebrating its large Pacific Island population and its contribution to the vibrant Wellington community. More than 35,000 Pacific Islanders live in Wellington.
