bus-accidentAt least, 21 people but possibly more were killed on Thursday during a bus accident in the Anatolian city of Kayseri in central Turkey.

The bus tipped over after sliding on an icy road in a town in the Kayseri province, governor Orhan Duzgun told Turkish television.

The majority of the bodies of the deceased were removed from under the overturned bus.

Some of the passengers died when they jumped out of the vehicle’s windows. Duzgun also said that the death toll could rise as two passengers were seriously injured.

Expressing concern that the death toll may rise, Provincial Health Director Dr. Ahmet Oksuzkaya said that many ambulances from Pinarbasi town and Kayseri’s city center were dispatched to the accident scene. There is, however, no information about how the accident occurred as of yet.

At least 5,000 people are killed in traffic accidents annually in Turkey. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving.
