download20-150x150Holland America’s Veendam was forced to change course on Thursday after a passenger required emergency medical attention, according to the United States Coast Guard. An unidentified 69-year-old woman reportedly fell down a flight of stairs while onboard, sustaining a head injury and possible internal bleeding.

The ship, which was on the second of five sea days on its route from San Diego to Hawaii, turned around and headed back. The vessel was met about 150 miles offshore by a Coast Guard helicopter, which medevacked the passenger to land.

Cruise Critic News Editor Dori Saltzman’s father, Steve Saltzman, is onboard the sailing and reports that the ship will arrive in Hawaii on Tuesday — one day late — as a result of the detour. Passengers will miss a planned call on Hilo on Monday, and they’re slated to arrive later than scheduled in Honolulu, Tuesday’s planned port of call.

There has been no word yet on the status of the injured woman or how the remainder of the itinerary might be impacted. We’ve reached out to Holland America for comment and will update this story as more information becomes available.
