Northern-Territory-300x105Football fever has gripped Central Australia with Adelaide United to touch down in Alice Springs this week ahead of its pre-season clash against A-League rival Melbourne City at Anzac Oval on Saturday 23 August.

In a four-day football feast, the Reds will also play a special exhibition game against an Alice Springs All Stars team on Thursday night.

“Central Australian sports fans are in for a treat this week with Adelaide United ready to embrace its home away from home, the Northern Territory,” Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing Matt Conlan said.

“It is fantastic to see that as part of the club’s agreement with the Northern Territory Government, the Reds will not only play two matches this week but also conduct a number of community engagement activities where locals can get up close to some of the biggest stars of the game.

“As part of their visit to Alice Springs, Adelaide United players and development staff will visit several schools to conduct football clinics while coach, Josep Gombeau, will hold a ‘coach the coaches’ clinic to pass on his football wisdom to local coaches.

“These clinics will help with development of the sport in Central Australia and grow participation particularly at the junior level.

“The club will also hold a special open football clinic for kids and teenagers at Anzac Oval on Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm, held in conjunction with Melbourne City and Football in Central Australia (FICA).

“The players will also do their bit to promote tourism in the Red Centre through the club’s partnership with Tourism NT, visiting the Earth Sanctuary, Pyndan Camel Tracks and our world-class mountain bike trails.

“The Country Liberals Government is delighted our partnership with Adelaide United is bringing multiple benefits to the community.

“We are committed to bringing first-class sporting events to the Centre and this weekend’s pre-season game comes on the back of the hugely successful inaugural AFL premiership game between Melbourne and Port Adelaide, the Parramatta Eels Trial Match and the England Ashes team visit last year.”

The A-League pre-season match kicks off at 3:30pm Saturday 23 August tickets are on sale at Intersport Alice Springs, Hot Stuff for the Sporting Buff and Sportspower or at the gate.
Entry to the Alice Springs All-Stars match at 7:30pm on Thursday night is by gold coin donation.
