Man_of_Steel2There was a special arrival checking-in at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield today – the Yorkshire Man of Steel.

The four metre high sculpture will be on display within the terminal building at the Yorkshire airport to welcome passengers during the summer holidays.

It arrived at Doncaster Sheffield Airport after making an appearance at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate, and other key destinations around the region, including Sheffield train station, Meadowhall, Magna and Sheffield Hallam University.

Steve Mehdi, creator of the Yorkshire Man of Steel, is locating the sculpture in prominent locations around the region to raise awareness of plans to build a 30-metre high version over-looking the Tinsley viaduct in Rotherham.

Passengers will be able to get close to the sculpture at Doncaster Sheffield Airport for photos and learn more about the Yorkshire Man of Steel project.

As part of the completed sculpture, members of the public can, through a small donation to the project, add their name to what will be a 2.5 tonne heart sculpture made from super alloys which will sit inside the final version, allowing visitors to walk around and explore.

Steve said: “It’s fantastic to see the Yorkshire Man of Steel sit within Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Wherever it goes the sculpture attracts a lot of interest and it will be the same here as thousands of passengers pass through the airport.

“We want to create an iconic sculpture which will be seen by millions of people and become a landmark destination within the Sheffield City Region. Many of those visitors will travel into the area via the airport, so it is great synergy and brings a strong relevance for Doncaster to have more engagement with our landmark project.

“This is our opportunity to tell the world about Yorkshire Man of Steel, the history of industry in this region and what we are doing now to create a positive future. You never know, while he is here the Man of Steel might be tempted to enjoy a brief holiday somewhere such as Riga, Corfu or Belfast for a few days!”

Chris Harcombe, Head of Aviation Development at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, added: “We are delighted to have the Yorkshire Man of Steel sculpture on display within the terminal building. He will be with us during the busy summer months and will undoubtedly become a unique attraction to the thousands of people travelling from the airport.

“When the world thinks of South Yorkshire, they think of the steel industry. This is still relevant today with the region a leading global location within the advanced manufacturing sector for delivering quality materials around the world.

“Looking positively forward to economic growth, increased tourism and higher skills is not only the vision of the Yorkshire Man of Steel, but what we are striving to achieve here at Doncaster Sheffield Airport.”
