Collaboration of the MTPA with the German Travel Trade

download-62 (1)Several important meetings were held in Frankfurt between the Minister of Tourism and Leisure Hon. Michael Sik Yuen, the Director of the MTPA Dr. Karl Mootoosamy, major tour operators and airlines in Germany. The fruitful meetings were organised in cooperation with AVIAREPS Tourism on the 2nd and 3rd of September, with the aim of increasing tourism arrivals from Germany.

During the first meeting with Lufthansa, the German airline carrier confirmed their interest in flying from Frankfurt directly to Mauritius. One to one meetings with the major Tour Operators such as DER Touristik and Thomas Cook were also done to reinforce the image of Mauritius as a sporty and honeymoon destination. DER Touristik, with its different Tour Operator brands (I.T.S., Jahn Reisen, Tjaereborg, DERTOUR and Meier’s Weltreisen), is the second biggest tourism group in Germany and is based in Cologne and Frankfurt.

 

In all workshops, the MTPA emphasized on the different attractions of Mauritius such as the new airport infrastructures- the new terminal that can accommodate aircrafts alike the A380 and which can handle a total of 4.5 million passengers annually. Furthermore, Michael Sik Yuen and Karl Mootoosamy explained to the travel trade that Mauritius is a destination that hosts several yearly events, such as horse racing, the annual Festival International Kreol and high class golf and kite surf tournaments. In addition, Hon. Michael Sik Yuen said that Mauritius is proud to host the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open in May 2015, the first ever tri-sanctioned tournament endorsed by the Sunshine, European and Asian Tours.

 

To showcase Mauritius as a Family and Sport destination to the German travelers, the MTPA and the different German Tour Operators expressed their interests to cooperate on common marketing and PR activities. They underlined that bookings for Mauritius has increased since last year and wish to put more efforts in selling the destination. In 2013, 60,530 German travelers came to Mauritius representing a growth of 9.7% over the previous year of 2012. For the first semester of 2014, 32, 621 Germans visited the island representing a growth of 2.3%  compared to the same period of 2013.
