The Hodgman Liberal Government’s top priority remains jobs, and the current momentum within our world-class tourism industry is continuing to provide more jobs to Tasmanians.
Recent research conducted by the Tourism Research Australia’s (TRA) State Tourism Satellite Accounts (State TSA) has demonstrated the strength of the state’s tourism industry, with the number of direct and indirect tourism jobs in Tasmania reported as 36,700 or about 15.3 per cent of total Tasmanian employment in 2014-15.
When compared with 2013-14 the number of people employed in tourism related jobs has risen by 4500 for the year 2014-15.
The Satellite Account also found that tourism’s total value to the Tasmanian economy grew by $270 million over those 12 months, setting a new record of $2.55 billion – or 9.9 per cent of total Gross State Product.
The State economy has received another boost, with yesterday’s ABS figures confirming that Tasmania’s retail trade is booming.
The nominal value of retail trade was a record-breaking $499.7 million in June 2016.
This is up 0.3 per cent from last month, and up an amazing 5.1 per cent compared to this time last year.
Retail trade has grown faster in Tasmania than in any other jurisdiction in the last 12 months, and is well above the national average of 3.1 per cent.
This result is an indication of consumer confidence in the state’s economy.
Furthermore, the estimated nominal value of Tasmania’s exports Tasmania increased to $2.85 billion, or by 12.3 per cent in the year to June 2016 when compared to the previous year.
China remains our largest export partner, with the nominal value of exports to China (including Hong Kong) increasing by $337 million, or 51.9 per cent in the year to June 2016. Exports of non-ferrous metals and seafood were the primary driver of this increase.
While there is always more to be done, Tasmania is heading in the right direction, and the Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to build upon this momentum to get the best results for Tasmania.
