Officials say that it seemed that a month’s rain had occurred in the last 24 hours burying houses in a muddy slush along with rocks as rescue workers helped people to safety.

The National Police Department has reported that the death toll has reached 18 and 13 more are still unaccounted for.

There are a number of people missing who were washed away with the rain. The total count is yet unknown.

It is believed that many that have been washed away are children. A two year old boy was one of the youngest victims to get washed away in the rain and muddy flood.

People were caught unaware as water from the nearby river gushed into their houses given them no time to reach out for safety or help.

The number of military personnels for rescue operations has been increased by several hundred on orders of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Landslide is likely to recur with more rain in the region.

There are many houses in Central Japan which are built on the steep slopes and heavy rain can cause the most challenging situation for people in this region
