Madagascar police arrests seven more people on Sunday, after a raging mob lynched two Europeans and a local man accused of killing and mutilating a young local boy.
After the inhuman events in the resort island of Nosy Be on Thursday now 26 people have been arrested by the authorities. Members of the security forces are patrolling the streets round the clock.
On Sunday local residents attended church and tourists strolled in town or headed to the beach.
On Thursday mob turmoil was sparked by the news of horrific death of an eight-year-old local boy, after he went missing and whose body was later found after a week on the popular Ambatoloaka beach.
A local gendarmerie official informed seven more had been arrested early Sunday in Ambatoloaka and the suburb of Dar-es-Salam where the boy lived.
Initially Reports circulated that the boy had been kidnapped before being killed, causing a mob to storm the gendarmerie station convinced that one of the boy’s killers was being held there, upon which the officers opened fire and two people were killed.
Amid rumours of foreigners involvement in it, a mob of hundreds got their hands on a Frenchman and a Franco-Italian on Thursday and torched them on Ambatoloaka.
Mob justice is common in the island nation which makes difficult for authorities to police effectively.
One resident of Nosy Be claimed the crowd had made sure the Europeans were guilty before lynching.
“They spoke for a long time until the morning hours, and then the foreigners confessed they had killed the child.
We have it on video,” he said, who lives in the Dar-es-Salam suburb where the local man was killed.
Both France and Italy confirmed the deaths and have urged their citizens on Nosy Be to remain cautious and stay indoors at night.
At present around 100 French tourists visiting and about 700 French people live on the island of 40,000 residents.
